RULES
OF THE GRADING PANEL FOR DAN GRADES
1. GRADING
PANEL This is made up of Dan Grade holders nominated by their respective
clubs and approved by PJM council from time to time.
2. AUTHORITY
Examiners are authorised to grade as follows:-

3. CERTIFICATES
- Dan Grade certificates from the International Judo Federation will
be issued to successful candidates. PJM will also issue its own certificate.
4. GRADING FEE $50.00 For 1st Dan PJM Certificate. $50.00 + $10.00 Additional
for each Dan thereafter. $100.00 For each IJF Certificate.
5. GRADING
Member Clubs may conduct gradings at any time during the year. Where
possible, a Grading at national level may be conducted. Combined Gradings
are encouraged, eg. Melaka and N. Sembilan; Selangor and F. Territory;
Sarawak and Sabah.Clubs, wishing to have the services of higher Dan
Grade examiners to grade
according to their authority as indicated in Para 2 should write to
the Hon. Secretary PJM (copy to Chairman of Grading Panel), to make
available an Examiner. The club concerned will meet his expenses for
board, lodging and travelling.
6. RECOMMENDATIONS
As a result of a grading, recommendations should be made out on the
form as attached duly completed. Recommendations to be sent to the Hon.
Secretary PJM with a covering letter (copy to Chairman Grading Panel)
for necessary action. Such action will be taken twice a year, i.e. June
and December
All recommendations must be endorsed by the President of PJM before
despatch to IJF with the fees for IJF Certificates.
7. PROBLEMS
Clubs facing any problems in regard to Grading, recommendations, interpretation
of these Rules, should write to the ( Chairman Grading Panel ) for clarification.
A meeting can be arranged, should there be any matters that needs to
be brought up with the PJM Grading Panel. Five members of the Grading
Panel will form a quorum. Alternatively, the views of the Grading Panel
may be sought by circulation and a decision made by the majority having
the same views.
8. REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for promotion to Dan Grades, candidates must fulfill the
following requirements:
( a )
Minium Age Limit
Dan Grade 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
Age 15 18 24 32 40 50
( b ) Kata
Shodan Nage-no-kata tewaza, koshiwaza, ashiwaza
2nd Dan Nage-no-kata complete 5 sets
3rd Dan Complete Nage-no-kata and Katame-no-kata
4th Dan - do -
5th Dan - do -
6th Dan Kime-no-kata or Goshinjitsu-no-kata
( c ) Contest Record
A candidate needs to score 4 points, either, in one attempt, or accumulated.
Points are awarded as follows:-
Defeating
an opponent of the same grade 1 point
Defeating an opponent of one grade higher 1½ points
Defeating an opponent of two grades higher 2 points
Defeating an opponent of one grade lower .5 points
Defeating an opponent of two grades lower .3 points
Draw with an opponent of the same grade .5 points
Draw with an opponent of one grade higher .75 points
Draw with an opponent of two grades higher 1 point
Candidates above 40 years of age may be exempted from contest, but must
qualify for at least a " D" Rating in Randori as follows;-
" A " rating - randori 24 days a month
" B " rating - randori 20 days a month
" C " rating - randori 15 days a month
" D " rating - randori 10 days a month
Candidates
above 45 years of age, are exempted from Nage-no-Kata.
( d ) Training Years
Candidates
intending to take a grading, need to satisfy the time requirement as
regards to the years of training as follows:-
1st Kyu to Shodan 1 year as 1st Kyu
1st Dan to 2nd Dan 3 years as 1st Dan
2nd Dan to 3rd Dan 4 years as 2nd Dan
3rd Dan to 4th Dan 6 years as 3rd Dan
4th Dan to 5th Dan 8 years as 4th Dan
5th Dan to 6th Dan 10 years as 5th Dan
9. HONORARY GRADES
For outstanding services rendered in the cause of Judo, Honorary Grades
may be awarded to deserving candidates on the following basis:-
To 1st

2nd Dan to 3rd Dan 6 years as 2nd Dan
3rd Dan to 4th Dan 8 years as 3rd Dan
4th Dan to 5th Dan 10 years as 4th Dan

10. CHAIRMAN
OF GRADING PANEL
From among the members of the Grading Panel, a Chairman is to be elected
to hold office for a term of 2 years. He is eligible for re-election,
if he so wishes, but there is nothing to prevent the election of a new
Chairman if need be. The main function of the chairman is to ensure
the smooth implementation of the Grading Rules vis-a-vis the Gradings
conducted. He is at all times available for advice whenever problems
crop up in consultation with the Technical Advisers. If the problems
are
complicated, a meeting of the Grading Panel will be convened. Whenever
convenient, members of the Grading Panel will meet for general discussion
under his Chairmanship.
11. ADDENDUM
AND AMENDMENT
These Grading Rules are subject to addendum and amendment as, and when
the need arises on the advice of the Grading Panel in consultation with
the Technical Advisers to up-date the rules.
